me and my friend have a thing for Mini's, they all must have a name beginning with "T" (cant remember why) and if you are the boy the Mini must have a girls name and vice versa. His mini is called Tasha (mini Mayfair), his sisters is Thomas the Rusty (Clubman estate), His mum has two: one is called Toby (Clubman convertible)and the other Tobias (bmw mini One). Trixxie was the name I thought suited her best, so it stuck:p
may post pics of some of the other peoples Minis I know later

so if shipping one to america costs less than $2000 , I could buy one right now and ship it over here!
nice rollcage btw
octagonalpaul
12-19-2007, 01:57 AM
yep, they are a fair few in america already, so you may even find one around if your lucky; its always worth a look on ebay or something similar.
i've seen ones on ebay, but there's very few and they're very scattered. plus the prices are around $5000 for one in 'fair' condition. THere's one in a town near me- mint condition, completely restored, but it's $17,000, and my limit is $4000 :(
i think it would be better for me to have one shipped from britain
ps: what does 'wobbling neurotic cucumbers' mean?

I don't know which part of America you're in, but I found these Mini's which look like the right kind of thing:

Your Mini but in BRG (or black), old english white cooper stripes (if its a cooper, if not then it wont) and OEW roof is what I want my mini to look like. :p
I lurrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrv the old minis, no matter what im getting one! Hopefully as me first car, then work on it to get it how I want it. :)
Whats the performance/noise/handling like?
octagonalpaul
12-19-2007, 11:38 PM
thanks for the comments:)
@tommo: thanks for putting my car as your wallpaper, I sent you a pm with the full res for that picture now
@David
performance is good, acceleration is great considering its a 998, though the stage 1 kit makes a decent improvement. thats down partly to the car being so light though:p top speed is around 90 so not that fast, but it feels a whole lot faster than it is so thats not a problem. noise is brilliant, its got a cone filter and straight through exhaust; as its from 1988 doesn't have a CAT so it sounds really nice, low and throaty. I made a little video of the car earlier, so I'll post it soon so you can hear it (though my cameras sound isn't too good)
Yum, one of the only fwd cars I can really like. Not as 'cheap' in Norway as in Britain though, can possibly get a wreck that needs a total rebuild for 1k...

I meant when your driving about, is it quite or is it well noisy?
xD
Sounds ace tho, kinda like an old plane :p
octagonalpaul
12-20-2007, 12:53 AM
its quite loud inside, but you can still talk over it:p never gets annoying though
David
12-20-2007, 01:44 AM
Lol sweet.
Mt mate had a 998 Austin Metro, and since the Mini is meant to be about the same, I have vision of sitting in a Mini at 70 and having to shout to my mate from the whine of the engine going mental. xD
It quieter with the stage 1 or that make no difference/louder?
octagonalpaul
12-20-2007, 02:55 AM
this is the stage 1 kit:
http://www.minispares.com/Product.aspx?kid=32605
Long centre branch (LCB) exhaust manifold
Mini Sport Superflow side exit exhaust (ST400)
Mini Sport alloy water heated inlet manifold
Exhaust manifold gasket
Performance Cone Air Filter
Carburettor needle
Carburettor spring
Exhaust fitting kit
so the kit makes it a fair bit louder, thanks to the new exhaust manifold and filter mainly
lmao what you gonna do take the catalic convertor off?
lol i joke loving the car looks soo much fun
it's just the laws in europe are different from the ones in america. what's street legal there might not be here
is europe more strict or more lenient emissions-wise compared to america?
InFeRnO
12-20-2007, 06:18 AM
cool car man love the tyres
sadly i cant fit in that car LOL
I think our laws on carbon emissions are more tight than the laws in the US mate, started when we signed up to the Global Warming Preventation thing, American never did, then the law changed here.
So aye, you should be ok
octagonalpaul
01-02-2008, 10:59 PM
The Mini's away for a few days now, getting lots of stuff done so I can't wait till its back:) getting some new discs, some tuning to get the stage 1 bits running at their best and some other stuff.
David
01-02-2008, 11:04 PM
Did you install the stage 1 yourself? If so, was is easy or can a non-engine minded numpty do it themselfs? :D
octagonalpaul
01-02-2008, 11:06 PM
It was already on the car:p but the previous owner didn't seem to have set up the carb or anything with the new kit, so Its not running at its full potential. Stage 1 kits are fairly simple to fit though, except for the exhaust system unless you have alot of room under the car.
David
01-02-2008, 11:09 PM
Ah right, sounds like fun lol. You rekon you'd get alot more out of her when she's back with the small tweaks?
octagonalpaul
01-02-2008, 11:17 PM
not sure, but I hope so! The stage 1 kit gives around 20% power over standard, so with being set up properly it should make a good difference. the new brakes will def make a big difference, looking forward to that:)

Nice little car everyone should have one of those on their list of cars to own in a lifetime.
In regards to the discussion about importing a Mini to USA, there is a cut off limit (not sure how old) which basically means older cars being privately imported are exempt. Some people import Rover Minis and tell the authorities that it's an older car which has had the Rover stuff retrofitted.
okay, maybe i won't get a classic mini as my first car... but it's still high up on my dream car list
octagonalpaul
02-13-2008, 05:38 PM
Trixxie should be ready next weekend, I really can't wait:) I've collected more stuff for her over the time she's been away: Alpine amp, CD player and sub, "short vehicle" sticker, and some little bits. My friend may be buying an ex safety car Metro pickup for around £50, so the rollcage, engine and breaks from that may be used in his mini
X2Core
02-13-2008, 05:41 PM
wow decent mini, my cousin has one, a mayfair one, brought it for less than 300... very good condition, he's got some arches and stuff, big plans but nothing OTT, will post some pics if you like, once i have some, but i love minis, since seeing a few recently, they can be quite rapid, haha, his mates have a thing about minis too, 4 of them own minis.

if you want a cheap but a painstaking job, why not fit a vauxhall 2 litre redtop lump in to it. seen it done a few times. fast as shit.
octagonalpaul
02-15-2008, 11:01 PM
been done before, but tbh the vauxhall engine is not that good in the mini (its too heavy and messes up the handling), a vtec works much better, but its just not the same as a proper A series engined mini

More power = better. :D Supercharger FTW!
Tbh, as a project the only thing i'd do engine swap wise to a Mini is either a vtech in the front or a Rover V8 in the back. Dno why, but thats just my personal preference.

i have had about fivr minis im on my oldest mini now i have a 1962 austin mini which im making into a retro racer ten inch wheels OEW with a Black roof maybe Surf blue wth Black roof and White Roofrack and racing numbers on the doors. my car will be an 850cc engine in it but it will be race tuned and preped. for a fast road spec. will be very quick and very nimble. Cant wait. car looks kewl although dont like the apanels being smooth like that... only creates problems later with rust. still kewl mini though.
octagonalpaul
03-04-2008, 10:57 PM
thanks mate, you've got to love mini's havn't you hehe. I wish I could put 10s on mine but the front discs are too big and it costs loads for the cooper s conversion, though I heard 10 inch Wellers will fit over the brakes anyway so I may get a set of those:) Do you have any pictures of your mini's? looks good. now take advantage of those archers and lower it ;)
octagonalpaul
03-17-2008, 01:32 AM
Its already lowered alot at the front, could go lower but its already rubbing a bit on full lock, rear will be lowered though:)
i think it could be dropped more in the front and a lot in the rear...all depends on the fender work on the inside of them if you can go lower or not...just by looking at the pics it looks as though you have a bunch of room to work with :p
octagonalpaul
03-19-2008, 01:38 PM
Its weird, I think the pics are deceptive or something as it looks much lower in real life, strange that:p The distance between tire and arch on the front is 2 finger width, and its close to the bump stops so that wont really go much lower. the rear will be going very far down though, as there is never anyone in the back with the rollcage in.
thats what i like to hear  ...with my car i cant get any fingers between my wheel and the fender yet i dont rub even if its turned all the way ;)
nice Nlo, pics? and paul...damn i love your car, i want it....i love the colour too!! best part has to be the rims though...awesome, truly delicious!!

It looks a bit rusty, but mostly just on the surface. nothing some welding can't sort out though. If anyones wondering its a Riley Elf, which are getting really rare now, they were an upmarket version of the mini, this one is a 1967 model:) can't wait to get to work on it. even comes with a spare engine hehe

octagonalpaul
04-24-2008, 04:25 PM
that depends on what its like underneath... it may take a while to get it nice, but generally the plan is to get it as low as possible, put 2 spot lights on the front, get some nice 10in wheels, turbo or supercharged 1340/1380 engine in the future and maybe some cooper s brakes so the 10s will still fit. might leave the outside as it is, would make a fun sleeper then:D
getting it on friday instead of today now, needed a trailer

I haven't seen any around unfortunately, but I'll keep an eye out for you mate;) its getting quite expensive to get minis atm as the 50th anniversary is next year, but some bargains can still be found. Have you tried doing an ebay search using your postcode to find ones near you? its good to do it that way so you can go and see them easily. You should look out for rust under the headlights and in the floorpan, those are coommon places for rust to start. Sorry I wasn't on msn earlier btw, I was changing my radiator:

@David: out here in bucks all the minis are pretty far away from any chavvy types, none of them venture much out of the towns, so they're all fine.
On a different note, got pulled by the police for the first time tonight, my rear lights weren't working properly for some reason, so I've got to see whats going on there, though I think its just a dodgy connection or earth.

hows the mini going
did u goto santa pod? (17th this month) they had a mini event going on there
octagonalpaul
08-27-2008, 11:07 PM
^^ certainly did go to santa pod, see page 17 of this thread;)
the mini's doing nicely at the mo, I just love driving it. I now officially own the bluebird, and have driven it for the first time. Now I know what Matt meant when he said they're like tanks:p Its so massive compared to the mini, but very smooth. Its got a strange boxy charm to it, and lots of bits for me to get into. Tape player FTFW!
pictures coming soon hopefully

cool, what were your main problems with the mini? my cosuin got one, may point them out to him, and im kinda interested in them too, so, would be kinda helpful to know, :)
octagonalpaul
08-27-2008, 11:51 PM
not had many problems tbh, but I look after it alot! errrrm, It used to overheat very slowly but replacing the radiator sorted that, wheel bearings went but again not really major. the main problem with most minis is the electrics, sometimes my window wipers work, but others they don't feel like it hehe

08-28-2008, 12:10 AM
ok, thanks
what engine is it? cba to scroll back, my cousin changed his from a auto, to manual, with a 1.3 head, no idea what that is lol, but he says it'll be kinda rapid, + got any recent pics? :)

just a 998 in Trixxie, but its more power to weight and handling with minis. and its not standard;) It has uprated carb, inlet manifold, exhaust manifold, filter, plugs, and I've tweaked the fuel/air mixture to give it some more power, but at a cost to fuel consumption (I back of the fuelling sometimes for long journeys, to save petrol) I'm hoping to fit the supercharger kit in a year or so, which gives alot of power, which would be awesome. Don't have any pictures more recent than santa pod though, and the car is kind of halfway through a makeover:) Need to get my new tires fitted so I can put the old wheels back on again, atm I'm rolling 3 spokes on the front :p and she'll be getting a brand new front panel fitted as the original is getting rusty and losing strength. got all the parts ordered, just have to get it done! Having the Bluebird will help it get done faster though, as I don't need to rely on just the one driveable car
X2Core
08-28-2008, 12:42 AM
yeah, minis are more about power to weight, how much bhp u got? and how much is the charger gonna add? how much is one of those gonna be? about 2grand? i see a few turbo minis on the strip that outdone the new minis, everyone was like yeeeeeea!!!!!! xD
octagonalpaul
08-28-2008, 12:49 AM
the new minis lost almost everytime xD 'twas brilliant! Trixxie probably has about 45 bhp, and the supercharger adds about another 100 to that:eek: and the whole kit is £990.
X2Core
08-28-2008, 12:59 AM
nice, not bad, what you getting next for it, other then the charger in future?
octagonalpaul
08-28-2008, 01:04 AM
not sure really, I just want it low wide and fast! I've got a set a hi lo's to go on so thats the height sorted, its already very wide, so its just down to performance after that. which is the expensive bit! Over time I'll probably replace all the front end panels and fully rust proof them.
X2Core
08-28-2008, 01:08 AM
decent, fiber glass? wide minis ftw, is there much rust on yours? when theyre low, they 'look' fast anyways!

the worst rust was cut out and welded for the mot, but there are bits that make it look messy when you look carefully. over time Ill get new panels/ weld/ fill the rust. not really into the fibreglass panels though, I prefer good old metal!
oh my god, a supercharged classic mini?

Mines one higher than yours, and I've not got it!
Thought I think I prefer my interior colour of brown, the blue would really get to me.
Also you're a sod for leccy windows. I don't even have manual twiddley sticks, I have to open the window and push the mirror glass to adjust it XD
Whassat red toggle switch under the rear window de-mister do? :o
Oh yeah, what milage is it reading? That a G-reg on an '89 or an '90?
Can't be a Bluebird without some damage, nice black door :P
Edit, bollocks. Haynes says that mine (the LS) is almost poverty spec. Damn :[
octagonalpaul

poverty spec cars rule though;)
I don't mind the blue inside tbh, though I do agree with brown looking nicer. The mileage is 130,000 I think, but thats not too bad for these, they go on forever! Needs a decent service though, which I'll do when I've got time. The mystery red switch is the NAAAAAAAUUUUUZZZZ:D

130k is good for the age, they do indeed go on forever, mines just ticked over to 67k, 3 of those I've put on it.
Hope mines still going at 130 XD

well yesterday and the day before we went about adding a few bits....
http://i37.tinypic.com/2aha8fm.jpg
now it has twin carbs with throttle bodies, a free flowing dtm exhaust system inc. manifold and a whole lot of noise! I can't believe we did it in 2 days tbh. The most time consuming part was setting up the carbs, its a pain getting everything balanced but it was so worth it! The mini can now be heard about half a mile away, and its a realy nice sound thanks to the trottle bodies (vid should be coming later). Its also loads faster, but I think we can get it even better with a bit more work on the fuel mixture.
More pics and vid to come, hopefully soon;)

fuck me.
my mates mini is now insaaaaaaanely fast! last week, a few days after adding the twin carbs and throttle bodies to his mini he blew the engine up. So what did he do? Get a bigger and better one! our mechanical guru, also named Dave, has lots of race spec mini bits, including a 1400 engine. So now the white mini has a cammed, race prepared 1400 engine and the whole car ways about as much as a paperclip. Its faster than an M3 which tried to race him, so my poor Trixxie has no chance xD
So now i'm on the lookout for a metro turbo block, to see if I can equal him again:D 130 bhp, here I come!
vids coming as soon as I can make them;)

I went to the Ace Cafe again for the mods and minis meet last night, which was fun:) Went down with my friends with in a convoy of 2 minis and one beetle and generally had a great night. A couple days ago was a not so sad goodbye to one of the cars...
but not mine, my mates sister sold her estate to an american living up north for £250. he plans to strip out the interior and put a large engine in the back! At least it won't just be lying around, which gives us more space to work on the other cars
so goodbye thomas the rusty, you'll be slightly missed. (we used to "borrow" bits of it for our cars hehe)

octagonalpaul
11-07-2008, 12:50 PM
do they have front mounted rads? Its probably not likely, but it could not be getting enough air. Are you losing any coolant before it overheats or only after? My mini used to overheat, but changing the rad sorted it straight away, but thats more of a last resort; The rad doesn't have any holes or anything does it?

No, everything seems fine, but it gets to the point of nearly over heating.
But the temp stay stable, but its right up high on the gauge. But the coolant tank is hot but not boiling. All the pipe work/rad is hot so theres water getting around. Im really stuck for idea's at the mo. It runs okay, rouch when its cold, but thats due to half the exhaust hanging off xD
I just dont know what else to look at, :S Everything seems fine but the temp gauge is bothering me. I can drive it about okay, its just the temp gauge is making me wary,

the stock size varies, early minis have 10s as standard, 80s minis have 12s and the last ones had 13s. If you get a mini thats older than around 1996 any wheels bigger than 12s need some of the arch and front wing cut to fit. Loads of wheels fit minis, so you've got a good selection:)
