hey all, just by pure experimentation and deviation from another tutorial i found a cool way to make pearl paint, so i thought id share with you guys. this tut is written for ne guys, so if your more experienced please bear with me through all the details. at various parts in the tut your car will look rubbish, but keep going, because hopefully(i havnt tried this method on too many cars) youll end up with a good result

1.open up your base image. i chose this rx8. make sure your picture has lots of contrast on it and lots of lights and darks, other wise this tut might not work so well.

2. make a hue saturation adjustment layer. you can do this by clicking on the little black and white circle on the layers pallette and picking hue/saturation.
http://img130.imageshack.us/img130/6892/tut2copyyf2.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

3. step two desaturated the whole picture, which is not good, but this is the beuty of adjustment layers. select the pl tool or pen tool, which ever you are most comfortable with and select the body of th car, without the light windows and anything else that isnt painted, now, on your hue/sat adjustment layer in the layers pallette there will be a little white square. click on it. now with your car body still selected press crtl+shift+i. this will invert the selection, so that everything apart from the car apint is selected. now grab the bucket tool and male sure your foreground colour is black. click on the image. now only the paint is desaturated!

4. now for the fun bit! pick the colour you want your base paint to be. for best results, but the brightness and saturation to full.make a new layer (we'll call it layer one) and fill it with that colour. you will now have a whole image of the colour of your choice, in my case a sky blue. thats not what we want, so firstly hide your colour layer, then click on your hue/sat adjustment layer. now on the menu at the top click "select">"load selection"
http://img106.imageshack.us/img106/5920/tut4oh7.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

you will get a message dialog like this one. just leave all the options and it will work. now selct your colour layer again. click the mask button, a greyish box with a white circle in it. now your colour will only be on the cars paint area.

5. change your colour layers blending mode to either multiply, if you want a darker base tone, or colour for a brighter tone. i chose colour.
http://img130.imageshack.us/img130/8613/tut5ob2.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

6.now this paint looks good but its not quite finished. click on your colour layer, but hold the mouse button down. drag it to the button that looks like a post it note. this will duplicate your layer (we'll call i layer two). now press ctrl+i. this will flip the clour of your layer. now change the blending mode to screen. hmmmm..., probably looks rubbish. but all is not lost...
http://img130.imageshack.us/img130/2481/tut52kn4.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

to make the paint look better, click on layer two's layer mask, and click "image">"apply image" and select your background layer in the drop down menu and click ok. this will make the paint look much better, because it brings out the highlights, and makes the paint look more realistic. http://img293.imageshack.us/img293/8320/tutpart5sw0.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
to get a more prescise effect for the highlights press ctrl+l, to bring the levels dialog. drag the black button on the left towards the right until you like the look of your paint.

now, if you like your colour already, and dont wont to make it pearlescent, you can stop here.

7.now, finally, for the pearl effect :D
now again, we need to click on our hue/sat adjustmet layer. click "select">"load selection" click ok. with this still selected, click on our background layer. press ctrl+j (layer via copy), to copy that part of the background image. now we need this layer on top (lets call it layer three) so click and hold on it. drag your mouse to the top layer and let go. hopefully lqyer three will now be on top, and you wont be able to see any of your previous work (dont worry we'll fix that ;) ) now, change the blending mode to "hard light". Play around with the hue and saturation for different pearl colours ;)
there you have it! pearl paint!
